From time to time during Ramadan, I plan on writing some brief thoughts on an ayah or two that jumps out at me.
In Surah 2, Ayah 102, a part of it says “Sulayman believed, the satans disbelieved, and they taught people magic.”
In commentaries of the Qur’an such as Tafsir At-Tabari, satans in this ayah are human beings who were contemporaries of Sulayman (AS).
In the book Kitab al-Kaba’ir (Book of Major Sins), magic is listed as the 3rd greatest sin after shirk (polytheism) and murder.
Practicing magic and putting faith in it is haraam, forbidden. I have so many Muslims, who speak to me about this matter as if it is harmless or a matter of sport. It is not.
This includes palm reading, putting faith in the eye (‘ayn), reading coffee grinds at the bottom of a cup for fortune telling, etc.
Consider leaving all of this hookus pookus alone from this Ramadan going forward. There is no benefit in this and is a matter that will be questioned on the Day of Judgement.
And Allah knows best.
